My tank is situated as such that it gets indirect sunlight much of the afternoon.

I remember reading that a tank should get 10-12 hours of "light" per day. I am just setting up a timer for my NO lights and I am wonderwing how much to leave the lights on. I'd love them to be on when I am home in the evening, but I am not sure how many hours I can have since the tank does get some sunlight.

How much "complete" darkness (i.e. no overhead lights or sunlight) is ideal for the tank?

I would set the lights up around your schedule, I don't think a bit of AM ambient light is gonna hurt and you can always put up a drape. I personally have my lights on until 11 pm and the room is lit by sunlight in the am, no problems.
