I did a modest 20% PWC on 2/17 and added 250mL of ROWAphos to the 125mL already in there, tested the water yesterday and Nitrates 0 (!!!) Phosphates 0.03 or around there. He added a Tree Leather coral last week that doesn't seem to be doing so well, and an Anemone that he added over a month ago that disappeared, but I found it a few weeks ago, which doesn't seem to be attaching to anything, it moves around the tank a little but I can't tell if that's just current. Here's a few pics of those:

Tree Leather

Anemone

And the Red Sea Pumping Xenias are doing great:

And these fuzzy Mushrooms are coming back strong

The store he bought the Tree Leather from said it might do a little better in higher current, so any debris would be removed. He also suggested adding some Phytoplankton for supplementation. As for the Anemone, I think it's a lost cause. It was added before the new light fixture, so there's probably enough light in there now, but I think the damage is done. Any thoughts?

They look good. Hard to kill morphs.

Owner moved the Leather to the center of the tank in the flow stream and blew it off with a turkey baster, I guess a lot of dust came off of it. It's already looking better:

And full tank

Water test yesterday revealed another expected issue: declining KH and Calcium. Since the Nitrates (still 0) and Phosphates (0.005) are dropping, I haven't needed to do weekly PWCs, on bi-weekly right now. So KH has dropped from a high of about 11.5 throughout January to 9.9 last week before a 20% PWC, and now it's 9.2, so it needs to come up. I have some Brightwell Aquatic Alkalin8.3-P that is supposed to raise KH to desired level and pH at 8.3. I guess since there are no stony corals in the tank (yet) I don't have to worry much about Calcium, but I am trying to mimic ocean water so I would like to keep it above 400 at a minimum. Time to look at Kalkwasser?

Haven't posted an update on this thread in a while - will post pics soon. Added a bunch of corals that I got a great deal on and they're doing well. Nitrates still 0, KH dropping between PWCs, still gotta get to that but it's over 9 so I'm not stressing. Phosphates still coming up slowly. Stay tuned, I got a new thread coming for another tank, but it's simpler - total tear-down and restart.

New corals; overheating!

I added a bunch of new corals last month, which are doing great. Here's pics from when I added them, I'll post updated pics soon.

Star Polyp - looks better now

Xenia

Can't remember (in the back)

more pulsing Xenias

And this week, the outside temp hit 80+ for 2 days. This tank is built into a 'cabinet' that sticks out into an unvented vestibule that faces south. The tank got to 85 on Wednesday.

The tank was put there midway through the summer of '08, so last summer what probably happened was the tank cooked and all the corals died, and then the Nitrate spiked, and that's when I took it over. They're having HVAC vents installed in the vestibule and in front of the tank, hopefully we can avoid needing a chiller. But just in case, I'm going to get him a bunch of water bottles to freeze and put in the sump if it does spike again.

Oh yeah, Nitrates still 0, Phosphates 0.003-0.01, KH holding around 9.

Explosive coral growth!

The pics above are from 3/11/10. These below are from 4/19/10, 5 weeks later. I am in awe of my awesome tank maintaining ability. Ow! I just broke my arm patting myself on the back!

Left to right

I'm a little worried about the tree leather and the whatever it is behind it in the 4th pic. They don't seem to be thriving, but they're not dying.

Speaking of dying (let me pull my arm back now) they did lose the bi-color / Pacific Rock Beauty Angel when the tank temp hit 85. "Wolverine" was with them a long time, 4 years, so it could have been many factors but I'm sure the temp didn't help.

The HVAC guys added vents and that seems to have helped, so far I haven't seen the temp go over 81, and it's 79 in the morning. I'm still going to add fans to move the air around the lights in the upper cabinet.
