I had an idea in mind and then started laying the rocks. Then made some changes to get what I wanted.
I would recommend egg crate on the bottom tho to keep rocks from scratching the glass. Here's how mine went down
1. Egg crate cut to size
2. Sand just to fill in the egg crate holes
3. Base rocks on the egg crate. Spaces between so burrowing fish and critters had some deep sandy crevasses between base rocks.
4. Sand to desired depth and stacking rocks on base rocks.
5. Then add more rocks to the pile as per your design concept. Make sure everything is sturdy and can easily withstand a large turbo snails redesign plans.

Using the back wall certainly makes the stack more stable as you build.

This is 300lbs in a 150g. Put select pieces deep in the sand that act as pillars. And just work the rock around piece by piece until you like it. And keep it open for caves and water flow. . It took me ten hours to finally get it the way I liked it. You can use less rock. That way when you do buy a coral that is already on a rock. You will have a place to put it.. And research what corals you want. So you can aquascape your tank for certain corals.

Here's a pic if mine. The rocks are all along the back wall but the fish still have room to hide back there.
