Thinking of my next coral...

I have a 55 gal and I am doing a reef tank. Relatively new to the hobby and I want to do more corals soon. Right now all I have are a few mushrooms. I was thinking about a frogspawn... Is this a good one for a beginner? Are there other soft corals or LPS that you could suggest as nice confidence builders?

A frogspawn was one of the first corals I purchased and it has worked out well. To me it seems hardy and easy to maintain. Kenyan Trees are great confidence builders as they are easy to care for and grow quite rapidly. You need to be careful though as they can get out of control.

Frogspawn are very easy to care for and a great beginner coral like chase mentioned. Just keep them away from other corals, they have a nasty sting.

How about a brain coral. Nice and hardy. What type lighting do you have ? You could really help us by filling in your tank info.

I've had really good luck with my frogspawn (and I'm new to reef keeping myself). I also started with mushrooms and later picked up a good, healthy frogspawn. I also got a Kenya Tree Coral that absolutely went nuts. It grew so well that it started to take over my tank. I traded it back to my lfs. I'm sure if you provided your wpg, these old salts (ok, that was bad nyuk nyuk nyuk ) could really give you some excellent suggestions.

A colt coral is a good starter coral also.

Froggys are nice. Like stated above that was also one of my first corals as well. I love the look to them. You could also try some zoanthids. Be careful with the brains corals. They prefer to be kept in the sand bed. Make sure you have adequate lighting before trying one. What for lighting are you running now? Here's some other corals to try.
