I would use acrylic for many reasons, lighter, clear, known to be 100% safe, etc.
this place has the best prices for acrylic I have found yet, sheets, tubes & rods;

acrylic rod

check it out, the prices are great.
example-1/2"x 36" rod is less than $3!
