Today my cheap filter quit so i want out and bought a Rena rena filstar xP2. I only have a 20 gallon tank and i plan on using this later on a 75 gallon tank. flow rate is 300 gph and waterflow is 160 gph. (not sure what the difference is)

Is there such thing as too much circulation?
Is it ok to turn down the valve on the return nozzle or is it hard on the pump?

Not really, unless you are "blowing" your fish and what not around the tank aimlessly. If you have too much current you should be able to cut back on the output of the filter. Most have some sort of flow control on them.

I think you should be OK. I now have 2 600 GPH pumps going in my 125, plus 3 powerheads, and a mechanical filter that filters around 400 GPH, and I got a nice current going through the tank.
