trimming macro in fuge question

Its been a month and its time for me to trim the macro in my fuge. I have two different kinds. (razor Caulerpa i think & chaeto)

Is there a trick to trimming it up? Should I pull it all out of the sandbed and leave a chunk floating again or should I trim it like a plant and leave a small piece in the sandbed?

I would trim out at least half of it leaving it in the sand.
