I currently have 40lbs of LS. We were thinking of adding some more. What is the best possible way of adding the new sand? Will adding the new LS give me any kind of spikes?

make sure you clean it and skim the cloud of the top first at a minimum or you'll be cloady as heck.I'd say you should use non live unless you thinkt eh tanks biological activity is lackign or you have some good stuff that might add to you system
 
I'd push all the existing sand to 1 side of the tank, and make the other have the new sand. This will keep you bacteria exposed to the water and filtering instead of covering it up. It may not make a huge difference, but it will make some.
 
I think if you only add 1/2 inch of sand or less and then wait for 1 1/2 to 2 weeks and add more your sand critters will be able to get where they need to.
