uv filter? does anybody use them

Yes. I have a turbo twist 36w. Good for killing algae in the water column and keeping water clear. Also kills ich (if it goes through it). Oh yeah, it also kills pods that go through it.
 
I also have the turbo twist in mine. It is pretty easy to install. I just put mine in the return line
 
A properly set up uv filter will kill pretty much all life that passes through it. They're purpose is to kill bacteria, protozoa, and algae spores, but they will also kill pods that pass through them. If you have multiple returns or don't use it 24/7 then some life will still pass thorough.
 
Turbo twist 18w (x2 - 2 dfft tanks) on mine as well..
So far I have had no illnesses and no algae problems (whether that is due to the uv or not is a different story however).
