I have a 90 gallon tank and lfs guy told me I could do just a 5 gallon change weekly. Is there any truth to this.

You could do 5 gallons a week but you could do more a week also. If he was telling you that to save money then you should consider that there are 2 really important reasons for PWC`s. They replenish trace elements used in your Livestocks different processes. They also dilute excessive nutrients that end up causing nuisance algea.

I have a 90 gallon system and I do a 5 gallon weekly change just because its easy to use a 5 gallon bucket. I also don't have a protein skimmer yet. I do have a little trouble with algae though.

People usually suggest 10% pwc. I wouldn't see why the extra water changes wouldn't help with algae unless your not using RO/DI water. The water changes would help remove nitrate and other things needed by algae to grow.
