Can you use one of these on your tank without any adverse effects?

Not something you would want to use on a fish tank. That type of filter is not designed for continuous usage and would clog up quickly if used on a tank with a continuous water flow going through it.

I've got one of those as a prefilter to my well pump, just to keep the large items out (ie: sand) that would damage the pump.

No dice on that one. With RO, you get what you pay for.

If your alternative is straight tap, Id say any filter is better than none. If your trying to skimp on RO/DI, na'ah, not even close ; )
