Wavemaker

I am thinking about getting a wavemaker for my 55 gal tank but i was wondering are they specific to the fan?

What do you mean by specific to the fan? Do you not have any power heads in your tank as they’re crucial to a reef tanks health

Yes I have a powerhead but i was wondering if the wavemaker is specific to the type of powerhead

Most choose wave makers over powerheads just because they don't suck up your creatures as much. Hydors are known to reverse for no reason ??
Not sure what you mean by fan either.
I run a 'gyre' in my tanks. It does have a different shaped fan then most. It is like a paper towel tube sideways with rotary blades.
I like the Jeboa CP 25 for tanks like yours and the CP 40 for 75 and up.
4 modes and an adjustable pulse [wave].
I have 2 of the jeboas.1 each of the 25 and 40 and think they are pretty good for buck. Compare to Maxspect gyre .
