Wet/dry filters with bio-balls are generally preferred for FO tanks due to the fact that bioballs will accumulate nutrients over time which in turn increase nitrate levels.
IMO and the opinion of most others the best filtration for a reef tanks is 1.5-2lbs of LR per gallon and a good skimmer, and good water flow in the tank.

I've read all kinds of bad things about wet/dry filters with bio-balls, but I have been using this set up for 15 years. I have Theil AquaTech balls in there and I don't even know if that company is in existence anymore or if those balls are any better or worse than whats around today. I do regular water changes and my nitrate level is undectable, at least undectable as far as the color comparison with these old eyes. My 50 gal reef tank has about 85 lbs of live rock so that may have something to do with it too.
