There is a 5000 page thread out there. One of the owners is active in the thread it is not vinegar. If that's all it was then why have so many had success with it who have used carbon doseing? Nearly anything can affect your skimmer. If the side affect is having to adjust the skimmer I think that's a win. Go read the 5000 plus pages.
Here's the real side affects
Depending on how severe the particular algae is you have to keep up the your export or the algae will return perhaps worse than before. There's work involved. It's attacks the weakest algae first if multiple types are in the same tank. It can zero out nutrients. Dose to water volume not tank size.
