i dont think you were necessarily wrong scott. I know several folks that have them in a 75 gallon tank. I think we are agreeing different strokes for different lfs folks.

From what I have heard, in my opinion the gallons arent as much of an issue. The issue is the length of the actual tank. Most tanks 55-90 gallon's are only 4 feet long. I have been told tangs require more swimming room, so wouldn't a 6ft tank be the best in general? Disregarding the gallons? I mean of course you cant go with a 6ft 55 gallon tank.

Length and swimming room are important. Most tangs need at least a 6 ft tank but there are a few that will be OK in a 4 or 5 ft tank. JMO.

tangs like to swim.. but just as importantly.. they like hiding spots.. and lots of liverock to swim in and out of.
