I'm sure this will show my naivete...

What is the white stuff that grows in my aquarium? I find a lot of it in the lines running to- and from- my canister filter. It appears as a powder but when I pinch the lines, it breaks off in sheets or flakes and flys into the tank. I now scrub the lines with a tube brush every 5 to 7 days to prevent it from building up to this point. On the brush it is mucous-like, white to brown in color. The same stuff is growing on the fixtures -- when I add new water, for example the turbulence rubs it off of the fake coral/etc.

Is this just algae? I always thought of algae as green, not white. Is this dangerous to my aquarium?

Gah, I'm such a novice!!! : )

Thanks in advance. Ya'll have been very helpful to me!
