I cant find southdown, old castle, etc. in the area. Looking at quickrete`s website, their pool filter sand is advertised as silica sand, just wondering what the grain size is of this, if this is something that could be used in the aquarium.

i just used regular old silica playsand which if probably the same thing as quickcretes pool filter sand.

If you're wanting to grow a healthy live sand bed then Pool Filter Sand is out of the question. It has been cracked to give it jagged edges so it can trap more material. Unfortunately these sharp edges damage the small infauna that crawl through the grains.
