would I be burning my pump if...

the pump is a 1200gph one, and with a T-valve I have it running at say 1/2 that?

It's possible it'll complain a lot (noises and such). Just make sure to put the valve on the exit end of the pump.

Where is the T going to? Do you mean a ball valve that restricts the flow? One thing you can do easily is install a true "T" joint on the exit end of the pump, before a ball valve. What this does is redirect some of the flow back directly into your tank. That way, your pump can run at almost 100% naturally, and save you the hassle of having to worry.

Thanks RLG2182, that's a good plan The pump is not making anymore noise than usual but I like the idea of redirecting the flow.

Running that pump with it restricted that much will shorten its life. I have the same thing on mine that RLG2182 drew, but I do not use it. $3.50 in plumbing parts will save you a headache later.
