I had thought QT's were expressly for quarantining a new fish before adding to an established tank.

Then I read about people adding another fish to the QT before the first fish is "out".

Doesn't that violate the whole concept of a quarantine?

???

Yes, it puts everything back at square one. No new fish should be added to a QT until the current fish have gone through the process (4 weeks).

The only exception would be if fish from the main tank need treating which is possibley what you have seen people doing. If one fish from the main display becomes infested with a parasite, all fish must be QT'd in order to be rid of it. Unfortunately that is usualy caused from not QTing a fish properly when first aquired.

Cheers

It's easier if you think of it as a Hospital Tank in that case.
