I was saddened to read on another site that my favorite LFS, Nature Aquarium in Santa Monica, is losing its lease at the end of the year. (Strip mall owner won't renew. :bad-words: ) The owner is trying to find a new location, but rents in the west side of Los Angeles and in Santa Monica are insane, especially for a thin margin small business, so, he doesn't know if he'll be able to stay in business.

This is a real shame. The owner's very knowledgeable, has a great selection of plants, fish one doesn't commonly see, and he takes my excess fish, trading me dry goods for them. I think I need to go make a large purchase, just to help him out.

Sigh.

Most of my LFS have moved out to the fringes of industrial complexes. Rents are cheaper and customers will hunt you down when they are tired of the big box stores.

It’s funny you’ll see auto glass shops, and a brake/muffler shop/ and 2 doors down a fish store.
