Looking at Sacramento Valley relocation

My insignificant other and I have been talking over the possibility of moving to NoCal sometime in the near future. Somewhere in the northern part of the central valley would suit me fine. We're thinking somewhere within a 1/2 hour drive of a major metro area medical center since I work in the surgery department but otherwise relatively out in the boonies. I could also work at a surgery center of some sort so I guess it isn't ABSOLUTELY necessary to live close to a city, just as long as there is somewhere I could work within 30 minutes or so.
Where is the best towns/communities to check out for such a place? Access to a good LFS would be nice also. Any recommendations from current residents of the area?

I used to live in Sacramento. But it's been years.
There is a growing ( no pun intended ) Plant Club
SAPS. Sacramento Aquatic Plant Society

and

SAS http://www.sacramentoaquariumsociety.org/. I would say those members would know the best stores AND it's always cheaper to buy from club members.
