180 gallon approved! I think.....

My wife and I got out the tape measure and measured the room upstairs where I'm planning on putting my big malawi tank. Since there is not much difference in price, and there is a lot of difference in swimming room and gallonage, I think I've received approval to get a 180 gallon tank (72X24X24) for my malawi cichlid fetish. I'm gonna sell some equipment from a previous hobby so I guess I'm giving up something.

The 180 is better b/c the price is not that much different than the 150 high (about $5 - 10, it is longer which is better for the haps and peacocks for cruising, it has a bigger footprint and distributes weight better than the 150 high, and it hold more water for more water stability/dilution.) I hope this BTS (Big Tank Syndrome) cures my [acronym:1bb2b12651="Malaysian Trumpet Snails or Multiple Tank Syndrome, depending on context"]MTS[/acronym:1bb2b12651].

Wow...that really sounds great. I can't wait to see Rift lake cichlids in that tank.

I'm not sure if Oscarbreeder is absolutely correct though I did think that my 75 [acronym:feb4274c47="Gallon"]gal[/acronym:feb4274c47] was part of either [acronym:feb4274c47="Malaysian Trumpet Snails or Multiple Tank Syndrome, depending on context"]MTS[/acronym:feb4274c47] or BTS (nice one...gotta keep it handy) but I'm always thinking about getting another one...or a larger one...just more period.

*I've got to stop reading threads like this one...only feeds the need...[acronym:feb4274c47="Laughing out loud"]LOL[/acronym:feb4274c47]

there is a very complicated forumula for [acronym:950be27806="Malaysian Trumpet Snails or Multiple Tank Syndrome, depending on context"]MTS[/acronym:950be27806]... And big tanks fit in it.. I am just not quite sure how it all works out..
If you start gettting tanks for free.. then that is when you will find out that there is no true cure for [acronym:950be27806="Malaysian Trumpet Snails or Multiple Tank Syndrome, depending on context"]MTS[/acronym:950be27806]..

I'll keep you all posted on my condition. Lately I've only been obsessed with African cichlids. It is worse than when I was obsessed with loaches. I still have some loaches [acronym:05bf739a8a="By the way"]BTW[/acronym:05bf739a8a]. I highly recommend Botia angelicus if you can get them.

if the house is new and everything seems to hold that much weight well then great, but maybe you can add another support beam or cross beam right under where the tank will be to help support all that weight

great idea though, i would die to have a tank that huge*sighs*...lol

definetly keep us posted

The house is fairly new and the tank is going up against a load-bearing/exterior wall. I think I'm gonna still be able to get it. I've got to sell some stuff first.

tank full will weigh more than 1500 pounds in a fairly compact area, 12 sq. ft. and which will cause for a concentrated load of 125 pounds per sq. ft. Depending on where you live, your house was designed for 40-60 lbs/sq. ft. Even though its on a load bearing wall and most of the weight will be transfered to the ground via the foundation, you will most likely experience deflection or saggin at the front of the tank over time due to constant pressure which exceeds the design limit by more than double. I would be concerned, but im just an architect, what do i know. haha

Is there a remedy for this problem, other than not getting the tanK?
