$28 AUD Yabbies

I went to this aquarium today that changed to new owners. They had taken down all the tanks and started again. It looks heaps better now but they were selling Yabbies with i little red stripe on each nipper for $28. THis guy is havin himself on, he rekoned it wuz exotic. He had normall yabbies them whatsitsface destructor ones for $14 i paid 6.50 for mine. What other prices hav u guys seen for yabbies?? The best price i rekon is catch them in dams.

It sounds like they were "Red Claws". They are native to Northern Australia and are genuine tropical FW crays. C. destructor will live at tropical temps, but also live where the temp. gets quite temperate in winter. Saw 2 Monster Red Claws in a LFS in Townsville. Forgot the price, but they were massive. Incidently they had a very good range of African Cichlids and some high quality discus too.

That was probably a North American Procambarus alleni.

$1 each is the most i've paid.
I've had ones with the red stripe down the head but never the claws.
we have thousands of them down in collie in each dam.

I think $25 for a fully grown Red claw is probably fair. I mean fully grown ones can be massive... well for yabbies anyway.

I'll just hijack this thread to ask if anyone has kept Cherabin (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). It is a large Australian freshwater shrimp. I saw one at the lfs today... Didn't see a price.

They are used as top notch Barramundi bait. And as you can see from this link some people would rather eat them than use them as bait.

I'll just hijack this thread to ask if anyone has kept Cherabin (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). It is a large Australian freshwater shrimp. I saw one at the lfs today... Didn't see a price.

I have (and recently purchased some five-inch juveniles at around $6 USD each); they make for intriguing, if aggressive, aquarium subjects.

Adult male M. rosenbergii (look to the following images) may attain lengths exceeding 60 cm (including the extended chelipeds), though this may not hold true for the Australian morphotype of this wide-ranging species.

They do live in tidal rivers, but I believe they live in fresh water too..
