I think I will go with 3 africian leaf fish 1 africian butterfly fish and 3 synodontis

I was also thinking sand substrate

A single red eyed puffer would be nice

Id say no more than 1 leaf fish, as they get aggressive when older. I like bettaowner's idea. My lfs has a type of red-eye thats about 4", and is realky cool.

I would probably suggest against the synodontis. They get fairly large and the 29g isn't big enough to accomodate.
