I'm never been a fan of lava rock, but it looks good in your tank. I will say that excel or co2 will go a long way. What kind of lighting are you using?

If it's not rated for plants it will cause some problems over time. I've been looking at a nano plant led by fluval, I've seen it in action and I like it.
