I have a 55g tank that currently houses 8 neon tetra and two pearl gourami. I was at my LFS today and noticed a tank with a few full sized Buenos Aires Tetras living among a large shoal of red eyed tetras. I was told that the BA tetra were adopted and have been with the red eyes ever since. I picked up two RE and one BA for my tank. Worried about nipping issues. Any advice?

Hello Air...

Fin nipping is pretty normal with more aggressive fish. You can minimize this by heavily planting your tank. If your victims are more bottom living fish then plant Anubias nana or nangi, Java fern and mosses. You can attached these to lava rock or pieces of driftwood with cotton sewing thread. If they live higher up in the tank, then float Hornwort, Anacharis or Pennywort. The point is you provide hiding places for the less aggressive fish so they can avoid the bullies.

Another solution would be to keep the aggressive species in schools.
