My only thought is would it not end up over dosing the whole tank if you added it straight to the tank and enough for the volume of the tank? Because you would be adding it over and over and over again over time. Especially since you are only doing a partial water change, would it not add up?

Well, I don't believe Prime stays in the water that whole time. It would wear off like most everything else you put in the tank.
