I have been having this green-brown hairy algae problem latly, and my pleco died last night. The black shark dosn't seem to be exhibiting normal behaivor either. I checked my water levels and they are as follows:
nitrite-20
hardness-120
alk.-80
pH-7.2
I think this algae may be part of the problem, I have heard it can grow fast and is not good for aquariums (if it is brown algae). If I got a SAE, don't you think the algae would harm it? Anybody have any suggestions or know easy ways to get rid of this algae?

Ugh, go back down a few forums and look for the Hairy Algae thread I started. Mine seems to be going away. I am doing weekly 33% water changes, added an Algone nitrate remover to my HOB filter, dropped my plant fertilizers and then removed as much as I could by hand, pruned the plants that were infested. None of my fish seemed to care.
