it could. you might want to see why your growing algae.
1. are there any windows?
2. do you have a really high wattage bulb?
if you dont have one of these id just go and get some nerite snails or amano shrimp.
 
i dont think mystery snails eat algae but they might and if they do id get 15 more but amano shrimp are best
 
No, Nerite Snails only breed in brackish water. The snails that take over your tank are called Pond Snails, and they grow to the size as a Nerd.
