all-metal paperclips aquarium safe??

I'm using bent paperclips to seal one of those nylon bags to put in my filter. Does anyone know if this would be safe? Or would harmful things get into the water. Should I just melt the ends of the mesh bag with a lighter to seal it?

I always use a plastic zip tie for my media bags.
