If you don't have nitrAtes, you are not cycled. You mentioned that you used TSS to cycle the tanks, but changed water every day.
When using TSS you should dose it, and then not touch it for 2 weeks. This is one of the main issues.

I'm sorry. I wrote that incorrectly.

I never saw a nitrite spike, but I DO have nitrates.
