Aquaclear on the way!
Ok, I finally found a price I would pay for them and ordered two of them! Finally got a filter that should help my tank work properly. I know how to change the undergravel out of the second tank. I will set both up in the tanks for about 2 weeks before removing the old aquaview and undergravel.
My question is, is there something I need like bio balls or more surface area or will these filters work just fine without it? |

You can use absolutely any media you can fit in it, I use sponges and Chem-Stars in mine and anything else can be added at anytime for emergencies.
Thats the the beauty of the [acronym:9d097e8563="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:9d097e8563] [acronym:9d097e8563="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:9d097e8563]'s. See my threads pertaning to my AC500'110 bio-wheel modifications

I will just chime in with the fact that all my ACs run with nothing but a combo of sponges and bio-media (like the [acronym:030456339f="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:030456339f]'s own 'bio-max').

Cool pics and a cool modification. Now I have a question for you. With the modifications, if a person wanted to keep the water from churning up too much, why couldn't you make a bio-wheel out of the bio stars that actually sits in the water and as the water runs into the tank it doesn't splash at all? It would also eliminate a strong current by having them turn backwards toward the back piece of glass? Would be an interesting experiment and might also allow for the better filtration of a bio wheel without the drawbacks an [acronym:19dbc047df="Hang On Back"]HOB[/acronym:19dbc047df] can have on planted tanks and the [acronym:19dbc047df="Carbon dioxide"]CO2[/acronym:19dbc047df], [acronym:19dbc047df="Oxygen"]O2[/acronym:19dbc047df] exchange from the surface disturbance.

the idea of the bio-wheel is wet/dry bio-filtration.. the churning gives the bacteria exposure to the air wich has a much greater % of [acronym:acce374feb="Oxygen"]O2[/acronym:acce374feb] then whats dissolved in the water. that and the bio-wheel doesnt use up the [acronym:acce374feb="Oxygen"]O2[/acronym:acce374feb] thats dissolved in the water.. that is the benefits to using them.. if you have a [acronym:acce374feb="Carbon dioxide"]CO2[/acronym:acce374feb] injected planted tank its not something you would normally want..

I only run dual sponges, with no bio max in my [acronym:b39c713f2d="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:b39c713f2d]'s. just a lot easier to clean, traps more detris, and has plenty of surface area. nothing wrong with the bio-stones they put with the [acronym:b39c713f2d="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:b39c713f2d]'s now...just don't see a huge need for em really.

If anyone needs an [acronym:9ff433ca76="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:9ff433ca76] in the Burlington, NC area. Stop in Nature's Emporium. It's near Elon College on S. Church St.
I just got a 70 ( use to be called 300) for $21.99! All of the [acronym:9ff433ca76="Activated Carbon"]AC[/acronym:9ff433ca76]'s are less than what you normally see on the web. I don't have anything to do with the place. I just wanted to let folks know about the price. |

Here is where I got mine. 2 of them for $25.98 and that includes shipping! As for the biowheels, don' they disturb the water and help with the exchange of [acronym:72b365e461="Oxygen"]O2[/acronym:72b365e461]? I was just thinking that if the biolwheel not only was used as a waterfall but actually turned in the water it might work even better. It is still exposed to the air just the bottom of the biowheel is in the water at the same time. Dual sponges huh, should be easier than all those loose balls and stars. Will have to try something different in both to see which I like better and which works better, for me anyway. |
