I purchased the aquatop500 and was not sure if its overkill on my 46 gallon bow front.

Also do I have to put carbon and bio balls and other filter media in it? I know it won't hurt but its just more work than I want to do if I don't have to.

Did you buy the AquaTop CF-500UV? That is the one I have on my 60g. It is really for 75-100 gallon tanks, but I need it on mine since I have 8 angels in there right now lol! It is a bit much for a 46g, but it is also really good, bigger filtration the better. Yes, you need to fill the media trays with as much biological as possible, leaving one tray for mechanical, at least that's what I did. In the bottom I put filter pads and poly floss. Then I put some Purigen and sponges in the third tray, ceramic rings in the second and bio balls in the top tray. If this isn't even your filter, sorry lol. My $0.02
