Largemouth bass grow over 2ft long. You'd need a 6ft long tank minimum to keep a single one and then you wouldn't be able to keep anything with it because of aggression.

Peacock Bass are also occasionally sold in pet stores as well.

3.99 is not likely a peacock bass of any species, it's more than likely one of the native species. If that is the case the store may be breaking the law the possession sizes, limits and seasons set but the department of natural resources for gamefish extends to aquarium and do require a commercial fishing license to sell.
