I've had bettas for years. Single betta, 5 gal minimum. More if you want tank mates, but shrimp or snails could go in a 5/10 with them.
Highly active fish don't make good tank mates, like danios.
Barbs and some tetras apt hat are fin hoppers are a no no as well.
Most labyrinth fish ate very territorial, this includes gouramis unfortunately...
Cardinal, neon, rummy nose, bleeding heart, and black neon tetras do well, as do most rasboras (I have harlequin rasboras and cardinal tetras with my betta)
You could also do small bottom feeders like a few cory cats or some otos.
