How often should you change out bio wheels?

Never. They are designed to stay with the filter for it's life. Sometimes you will need to give them a swish in old tank water or clean off the white plastic knobs on the end to help it keep free moving but the wheel itself doesn't go anywhere

This, or if it gets totally destroyed for some reason. Not sure how that would happen though.
