Just lately my tank is getting worse every day with brown/ black bits on top of the sand. I have a large piece of driftwood in there but I scrubbed and cleaned before I put in. Could it be bits off that still? I suppose I cannot get rid unless u remove wood and sand?

When I enlarge the picture it appears to be fish waste which just sits on the surface of a sand substrate. It needs to be gravel vac'd up. When doing a WC you will have to hold the suction tube right above the sand and not push it into the sand or many gently swirl the tube over the waste to bring it off the bottom before suctioning it out.
