Blood Parrot?

I bought a baby blood parrot cichlid about 3 months ago from my local pet store. Because he was a baby when I bought him, I bought him as a darker color with black stripes similar to those of a convict cichlid due to the cross breeding between the severum and the convict. I am starting to get concerned because his color has not began to change over to red at all yet and I read that they typically will change colors after 4 months. He has grown but not gained any red/orange color at all. Any input?

My best hypothesis is that possibly the tank is too small. Small tanks stunt growth and will make any changes take much longer. Option 2 would be to give him a varied diet. I honestly do not know much about parrots. I am against hybrid or dyed fish.
