My mom just came back from a cruise and brought me back all kinds of stuff she found in the ocean to put into my aquarium. Problem is is that my aquarium is freshwater. Is there a way I can put that stuff in there without killing my fish? I was thinking of boiling them. Will that work?

If you're talking about shells and the like, I would say no. The problem is they are made of calcium carbonate which will gradually dissolve and harden your water.

Not really sure how the peat would help. If I understand what you are trying to say, the peat would tend to soften the water, but the decorations would still continue to leach the calcium carbonate into the water, so you’re not really making any difference until the decoration has completely dissolved.
