Can you tell used driftwood from new ones?

Hi all, I'm new here.

I bought a piece of driftwood for my new tank. I soaked the driftwood in warm water for two hours and scrubbed it down. Then I tried to placed it in my tank and realized it's too large for my tank...

I wanted to return this piece of driftwood since it was expensive, but I worry that the fish store can tell the driftwood is "used". Can you really tell if a driftwood has been used? My driftwood is dry now and I can't tell a difference.

Do new driftwoods smell differently than old driftwoods? I didn't smell anything.

I'd say take it back if you are in the area, worst they can do is say no. Don't give them any more of the story than you need It just doesn't fit.

Just let it dry out real good and then take it back, they should be happy to add least exchange it for one that fits
