Canister filter part

I have a Fluval 305 I got in a purchase of a tank. Problem is on the inlet tube at the bottom where there is supposed to be a valve to not let in sand, large stuff and fish....well it didn't come with that piece and I need to rig it somehow cause my rope fish almost got sucked inside. I turned the filter off for now. It's only on this tank to cycle b4 I set up the larger tank I purchased
