Check valve necessary? - Urgent help needed

When you disconnect the bottle to change out the solution, if you don't have a check valve in place, you could end up with the tank water siphoning out onto your floor. Is it 100% necessary, no. But for a couple of bucks it's worth avoiding the mess and frustration.
 
+1 Not absolutely necessary, but a good insurance policy. I've run DIY CO2 without it and had no problems.
 
I have one inline on my pressurized tank. I don't want to risk water flowing back into my regulator and ruining it. I put enough money in the set up, I figured what is another $3 going to do. If you do get one, get a brass one. The plastic ones fail a lot.
 
Look for a brass check valve. The plastic ones are cheap but break down over time.
