I have a 30 gallon tank and really want to house 4 cichlids. I the tank too small or are the smaller cichlids suitable?
If not I will not put them in and have rainbows instead.

rams will work or 1 pair(like they will not make a million fry) convicts

4 rams won't work well in a 30. If they happen to pair off it could be a blood bath.

I was thinking apistogramma borellii, they are really laid back. I bought a dozen juvies and kept them in a 30 for pairing, I ended up with 5 pair that spawned before I could separate them. They ended up raising the fry communally, each fish( even the odd males) had their own group to tend.

When you you say pair you mean male/ female? I would not want anymore than 2 pairs. Also do they eat smaller community fish like danio or tetra?

Some shell dwellers could work depending on what fish you already have.

You could do a Harlem of Kribs or rams (1m 3f) I had one in my 30 of Kribs and it worked great :)
