cleaner crew?

i have a malawi cichlid tank set up and was wondering if i would be able to put shrimp or something like that in there to help clean things up? or would they be killed or eaten right away?i have 2 cats in there now and a pleco.

I can't think of any shrimp right off hand that would be a good mix for cichlids. How about some snails?
