Colored Water

Is there a way to get colored water with out having algae or colored lights do it for you? Food coloring will just kill the fish. Ay other suggestions? Or is this just a bad idea?

I think it is just a bad idea in general. What are you trying to do? Lights might be an option, even white lights with a filter (colored paper, etc) over them.
