converting a 20 gallon high to a 30 gallon long

I have a 20 gallon high and it's doing fairly well (though I have a bit of a PH issue)

Someone just gave me a 30 gallon long and I’m thinking about converting the 20 gallon to the 30.

Would the tank have to re-cycle?

I would use all the same gravel and filter and everything.

What do you think?

If you're taking everything out of the 20g and placing it into the 30g, you shouldn't have any problems with re-cycling. It'll be the same tank-- just in a different glass box.

If you wait to add fish it should be a cycleless process.

I agree with Voodoo Chilli, if you take everything, really you are just adding some water. As long as you don't rinse the gravel, plants or decor with fresh water you should be fine. Just like moving the baby seat from one car to another... if strapped in properly, it is just a different box.

Great to hear, I thought it was going to be a massive process.
but i'll just buy a few more plants and rocks and then I'll do it.

thanks

Just make sure you don't let the gravel sit around for several days and kill the biological matter. I always run a spare filter for a month in a cycled tank if I am going to install another system.
