My daughter wants to put some coral in our 10 gal tank. If I remember correctly from my youth this isn't a good idea.

Dont do it. Waste of money and coral. Get a fake coral.

I have seen it done, they just washed it many times in water to make sure there was no salt on it. Don't think you will have a major issues with that. But when it starts to break down it will increase your ph and KH, it would be a slow process so it won't harm your fish unless you all ready have high ph

Just so we are on the same page, you are talking about coral found on a beach?
