I'm still in the midst of trying to get my 29 gallon freshwater tank to cycle. Nitrites and nitrAtes are sky high but ammonia is zero after 24 hours. I'm cycling without fish.

I have a small powerhead going in it to improve O2 exchange at the surface.

I was wondering if anyone has ever put the powerhead on the floor of the aquarium and aimed it straight up? Upwelling occurs in nature, especially in the ocean, but I have no idea if it would be a bad idea in a tank.

Anyone have any advice/experience with upwelling in a tank?

I havent personally done it, but theres no reason why it wouldnt work. I would just worry about substrate getting sucked into it.

Right now I have no substrate, as the tank is still cycling. But I bet that it wouldn't like gravel in the intake side. But after I posted this I thought, maybe benthic fishes/bottom dwelling inverts might not like being sucked into the power head. I want to get some Amano shrimp and I have read that they don't like a strong current...so I'll probably forego the upwelling power head.
Thank you for your input.
