curious: why is it that golden panda mollies are smaller?

Is it just a coincidence or is there a physiological difference in the small size of golden panda mollies, compared to every other Molly? Whenever I'm in petsmart, I see a tank full of golden pandas, but none of them are ever any larger than a platy. I bought one, assuming it was just a juvenile. Was my assumption correct, or should I not expect it to get much larger?
