Cuttlebone

I have a quick question for all you snail keepers out there who use cuttlebone as their source of calcium for resident snails. In the past, I have just shoved the whole thing in the tank, but for aesthetic purposes, I would like to just crush some of it up and sprinkle the powder into the tanks. Had anybody ever done this? If so, does it work? How much do you put in per gallon?

I was thinking of putting some cuttlebone in for my snails, and did a search, and this thread came up. But you didn't get any answers!!! What did you decide to do?

I break off a piece and stick it in the HOB filter.

And that is enough? They don't actually have to be able to physically get to the cuttlebone?
